Give it secure support
Use hanging fittings appropriate to the artwork’s weight and your wall. A professional framer can advise on secure installation. Any glazing should sit clear of the artwork’s surface.

Move with care
Avoid touching the painted surface or pressing the back of a canvas. Plan the route before moving a work, and use protective packaging that guards against impact and changes in the environment.

Leave the surface untouched
Cleaning and repairs belong with a qualified conservator. Do not experiment with household cleaners or attempt to repair loose paint, tears or discolouration yourself.

A lighter touch.
A little more protection.
Paper and delicate drawing media need particular care. Ask a professional framer about conservation-quality mounts and UV-filtering glazing. Keep the work away from sunlight; UV protection does not eliminate all light damage.
Handle unframed sheets as little as possible and support them from beneath with a rigid board. Keep ordinary adhesive tape and glue away from the artwork. Charcoal and pastel surfaces can smudge easily; avoid plastic sleeves that may generate static.
For storage, seek advice specific to the medium. Damp basements and attics with changing conditions are unsuitable. Leave cleaning, mould treatment and repairs to a paper conservator.
